Tutu Rural Training Centre in Taveuni reached another milestone recently, as their new state of the art nursery was commissioned by the Assistant Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Honourable Tomasi Tunabuna on Thursday 21st March.

"The opening of this nursery was only made possible through collaboration between British American Tobacco (BAT) and Tutu Rural Training Centre. The nursery will provide fruits and vegetable seedlings to around 100 farmers based here in the Garden Island of Taveuni," said Hon. Tunabuna.

"Tutu Rural Training Centre is a great example of perseverance and dedication and has achieved so much over the years. We appreciate the model that you have been practicing here at the Centre and believe that you are on the right track by encouraging and engaging with students and their families in agricultural programs that will sustain them well into the future," he added.

"On behalf of Government, I humbly thank BAT, and convey our deepest appreciation for their continuous support to farmers through their agricultural operations, which for the last 69 years, has operated as a model agriculture business in Fiji showing the immense potential of the sector," said Hon. Tunabuna.

"On behalf of the Ministry, I would like to thank you sincerely for your support and assistance as we cannot do this alone. Organizations like Tutu, complements the effort being put in by Government as a whole."

"The Ministry is confident that the construction of this nursery in Tutu marks the beginning of further opportunities for our remote farmers. The seedlings that will be provided from the nursery will allow farmers to grow more fruits and vegetables."

"BAT Fiji has been training rural farmers on seed germination and proper care of seedlings. Knowledge transfer is important as this will greatly assist farmers," added Hon. Tunabuna.

Hon. Tunabuna further added that the initiative by BAT Fiji allows the Ministry to expand its reach to remote areas through its Grow+ Project" he reiterated.

 BAT Head of Finance, Mr Rahul Prakash thanked Hon Tunabuna for officiating at the opening of the Tutu Nursery and said that it adds significance to the event and underscores the importance of collaborative efforts between the private sector and government in fostering sustainable development for rural dwellers.

"The nursery that we are opening today stands as a testament to BAT Fiji's commitment to making a positive impact on the environment for the communities in which we operate. Our belief in sustainability goes beyond boundaries"' he added.

The state-of-the-art nursery consists of a water tank and pressure pump with an automated irrigation system that will water vegetable seedlings and will have the capacity to grow 6,000 vegetables seedlings every 6 weeks or 60,000 seedlings every year.

Le Centre de formation rurale de Tutu, à Taveuni, a franchi une nouvelle étape cette semaine, puisque sa nouvelle pépinière ultramoderne a été inaugurée par le ministre adjoint de l'agriculture et des voies navigables, l'honorable Tomasi Tunabuna, le jeudi 21 mars.

"L'ouverture de cette pépinière a été rendue possible grâce à la collaboration entre British American Tobacco (BAT) et le Centre de formation rurale de Tutu. La pépinière fournira des plants de fruits et de légumes à une centaine d'agriculteurs de l'île jardin de Taveuni", a déclaré l'honorable Tomasi Tunabuna.

"Le centre de formation rurale de Tutu est un excellent exemple de persévérance et de dévouement. Il a accompli tant de choses au fil des années. Nous apprécions le modèle que vous avez mis en œuvre dans ce Centre et nous pensons que vous êtes sur la bonne voie en engageant les étudiants et leurs familles dans des programmes agricoles qui les soutiendront longtemps dans l'avenir, et en les encourageant", a-t-il ajouté.

"Au nom du gouvernement, je remercie BAT avec modestie et lui exprime notre profonde gratitude pour le soutien continu que l'entreprise apporte aux agriculteurs dans leurs exploitations agricoles qui, au cours des 69 dernières années, se sont affirmées comme des modèles d'entreprises agricoles à Fidji, démontrant l'immense potentiel de ce secteur", a déclaré M. Tunabuna.

"Au nom du ministère, je tiens à vous remercier sincèrement pour votre soutien et votre assistance, car nous ne pouvons pas agir seuls. Des organisations comme celle de Tutu complètent les efforts déployés par le gouvernement au plan global.

"Le ministère est convaincu que la construction de cette pépinière à Tutu marque le début de nouvelles opportunités pour nos agriculteurs isolés. Les plants qui seront fournis par la pépinière permettront aux agriculteurs de cultiver davantage de fruits et de légumes".

"BAT Fiji a formé les agriculteurs ruraux au suivi de la germination des graines et à l'entretien des plants. Le transfert de connaissances est important car il aidera grandement les agriculteurs", a ajouté M. Tunabuna.

M. Tunabuna a également ajouté que l'initiative de BAT Fiji permet au ministère d'étendre son action dans les zones les plus reculées, par le biais de son projet Grow+", a-t-il rappelé.

M. Rahul Prakash, directeur financier de BAT, a remercié M. Tunabuna d'avoir présidé à l'ouverture de la pépinière de Tutu. Il a déclaré que cela ajoutait du sens à l'événement et soulignait l'importance de la collaboration entre le secteur privé et le gouvernement dans la promotion du développement durable pour les habitants des zones rurales.

"La pépinière que nous inaugurons aujourd'hui témoigne de l'engagement de BAT Fiji à avoir un impact positif sur l'environnement des communautés dans lesquelles l'entreprise opère. Notre conviction en matière de durabilité va au-delà des frontières", a-t-il ajouté.

La pépinière ultramoderne se compose d'un réservoir d'eau et d'une pompe à pression avec un système d'irrigation automatisé, qui arrosera les semis de légumes et aura la capacité de produire 6 000 semis toutes les 6 semaines ou 60 000 semis par an.
