SEASON OF CREATION 2023: LET JUSTICE AND PEACE FLOW
From 1 September – the World Day of Prayer for Creation – to 4 October – the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the Marist Family around the world joins in the annual ecumenical celebration "Season of Creation". It invites us to celebrate the beauty and pain of our world, praise and thank God for his love and goodness, and take steps to defend our common home, especially in this time of ecological emergency.
Each year, the Ecumenical Steering Committee that organizes this Time suggests a theme. For 2023 the theme is "Let Justice and Peace Flow." In this link you will find all the indications about the Season of Creation.
Season of Creation is a Christian celebration of prayer and action for our common home, facilitated by the World Council of Churches, the Global Catholic Climate Movement, ACT Alliance, World Communion of Reformed Churches, the Anglican Communion Environmental Network, A Rocha, the Lutheran World Federation, Christian Aid, Lausanne/WEA Creation Care Network, European Christian Environmental Network.
Pope Francis, in his encyclical Laudato Si', challenges us "to provide an approach to ecology which respects our unique place as human beings in this world and our relationship to our surroundings" (Laudato Si'). In the same vein, the 2017 General Chapter of the Marist Fathers and Brothers decided to take its part in the care of the Common Home (Declarations and Decisions, IV E).The Ecology Working Group of the MSIN, in partnership with other Marist entities, has organized some online meetings during the Season of Creation.
The Integral Ecology working group of the Corazón Solidario Network has also organized a prayer, on the first of September, to open this moment of reflection, at 4 PM in Rome.
Season of Creation
September 1st was proclaimed as a day of prayer for the environment by the late Ecumenical Patriarch Dimitrios I in 1989. The Orthodox church year starts that day with a commemoration of how God created the world. On 4 October, Roman Catholics and other churches from the Western traditions commemorate Francis of Assisi, known to many as the author of the Canticle of the Creatures.
The proposal to celebrate a "Season of Creation" during these five weeks was made by the Third European Ecumenical Assembly of the World Council of Churches in Sibiu in 2007. The following year, the WCC Central Committee invited churches to observe "Time for Creation" through prayers and actions. In 2015, Pope Francis has designated September 1st as a World Day of Prayer for Care of Creation for the worldwide Roman Catholic Church as well.
Throughout the years, major Orthodox, Catholic, Protestant, and Anglican organizations have joined to encourage the 2.2 billion Christians worldwide to pray and act on ecological issues.
In 2016, Pope Francis and Patriarch Bartholomew I released their special messages for the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, kicking off the month-long Season of Creation celebrations. Both leaders used strong language to stress the urgency of the ecological crisis and the need to take action on climate change.
La saison de la Création 2023 – Avec les Frères Maristes de Champagnat
Du 1er septembre – Journée mondiale de prière pour la création – au 4 octobre – fête de Saint François d'Assise, la Famille mariste du monde entier se joint à la célébration œcuménique annuelle « Temps pour la Création ». Elle nous invite à célébrer la beauté et la douleur de notre monde, à louer et remercier Dieu pour son amour et sa bonté, et à prendre des mesures pour défendre notre maison commune, surtout en cette période d'urgence écologique.
Chaque année, le Comité d'organisation œcuménique qui organise ce Temps propose un thème. Pour 2023, le thème est « Que la justice et la paix se répandent ». Dans ce lien vous trouverez toutes les indications sur le Temps de la Création.
« Temps pour la Création » est une célébration chrétienne de prière et d'action pour notre maison commune. Elle est facilitée par le Conseil Œcuménique des Églises, le Mouvement catholique mondial pour le climat, ACT Alliance, la Communion Mondiale des Églises Réformées, le Réseau Environnemental de la Communion Anglicane, A Rocha, la Fédération Luthérienne Mondiale, Christian Aid, Lausanne/WEA Creation Care Network, le Réseau Environnemental Chrétien Européen.
Le pape François, dans son encyclique Laudato Si', nous met au défi de « proposer une approche de l'écologie qui respecte notre place unique en tant qu'êtres humains dans ce monde et notre relation avec notre environnement » (Laudato Si'). Dans le même ordre d'idées, le Chapitre général 2017 des Pères et Frères maristes a décidé de prendre sa part du soin de la Maison commune (Déclarations et Décisions, IV E).
Temps pour la Création
Le 1er septembre a été proclamé jour de prière pour l'environnement par le défunt patriarche œcuménique Dimitrios Ier en 1989. L'année ecclésiastique orthodoxe commence ce jour-là par une commémoration de la façon dont Dieu a créé le monde. Le 4 octobre, les catholiques romains et d'autres Églises de tradition occidentale commémorent François d'Assise, connu par beaucoup comme l'auteur du Cantique des Créatures.
La proposition de célébrer un « Temps pour la création » pendant ces cinq semaines a été faite par le troisième Rassemblement œcuménique européen du Conseil œcuménique des Églises à Sibiu en 2007. L'année suivante, le Comité central du COE a invité les Églises à observer le « Temps pour la création » par des prières et des actions. En 2015, le pape François a désigné le 1er septembre comme Journée mondiale de prière pour la sauvegarde de la création pour l'Église catholique romaine du monde entier également.
Au fil des ans, les principales organisations orthodoxes, catholiques, protestantes et anglicanes se sont unies pour encourager les 2,2 milliards de chrétiens du monde entier à prier et à agir sur les questions écologiques.
En 2016, le pape François et le patriarche Bartholomée Ier ont publié leurs messages spéciaux pour la Journée mondiale de prière pour la sauvegarde de la création, donnant ainsi le coup d'envoi des célébrations du « Temps pour la Création », qui dureront un mois. Les deux dirigeants ont utilisé un langage fort pour souligner l'urgence de la crise écologique et la nécessité de prendre des mesures pour lutter contre le changement climatique.
