Fr Hermes [Larry] Sabud reports on recent efforts at Peace-Making in Thailand:

INTERNATIONAL AND INTERCULTURAL DAY OF PEACE   Ranong, Thailand   21 September 2022

Peace is possible. Let's make it happen. This was the theme that the Marist Asia Foundation (MAF) Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue (IRICD) Program adopted during the celebration of the International Day of Peace alongside the celebration of the MAF Intercultural Day. The celebration started with the Painting for Peace Exhibition participated by the three schools: The Guiding Star Learning Center, Phichai Rattanakhan School and MAF Burmese Migrant Secondary Program.

The IRICD [Inter-religious and Inter-cultural Dialogue] Team visited the schools that participated in the Painting for Peace and handed over the paintings of their students. It was an occasion to thank the students, teachers and the entire school for their willingness to take part in the celebration of the International Day of Peace and the MAF Intercultural Day Celebration. Some paintings from Ranong's young artists. They were able to internalize the theme of the International Day of Peace: "Peace is possible, make it happen", and expressed it in their artworks. All artists were given three and a half hours to complete their work.

MAF - International Day of Peace

The International Day of Peace and the MAF Intercultural Day on 21 September 2022 were experiences                                                           of intercultural dialogue and peace amidst cultural diversity.

The International Day of Peace and the Intercultural Day started with moments of silence to connect with the wealth of cultural diversity among the participants in the events. The people present in the celebration are from Myanmar with their unique culture (7 states and 7 divisions), Mexico, Thailand and the Philippines. The silence was already an opportunity to draw closer to those who are suffering from war, violence and abuse by those in power, particularly the ongoing experience of suffering with our brothers and sisters in Myanmar, Ukraine, Russia, Africa and many other countries of the world. The language of silence is a powerful instrument which can make peace and harmony vibrate in the midst of atrocities in the present world.

Following the speeches, the young artists who took part in the Painting for Peace were awarded the prize and certificate. It was followed by presentations on cultural dances from different countries. There was also a special interpretative number of selected MAF students who highlighted the current situation in Myanmar. At lunchtime, the various national groups shared the delights in their own countries. While the community enjoyed lunch, others also enjoyed the games launched by each country group. It was indeed an inter-cultural day of celebration of the International Day of Peace.

Everything is possible when people begin to log in and share their cultural wealth and gifts.
