The earth is mother of us all

Fr. Luigi Savoldelli sm sent this news to us on 24 May the 7th Anniversary of Laudato Si:  For those who believe it is a planet shaped by the hands of God, for others it is an environment rich in resources, which are good for the eyes, which make us feel good in the depths of our being and which can be used for human needs. We call it Earth and all of us, believers or not, are its inhabitants, its custodians and we have it on loan for free use, on loan from our children and grandchildren, from those who will come after us and inhabit it.

Earth. Space. What we tell you are not "the journeys of the spaceship Enterprise, whose mission is to explore strange and new worlds in search of new forms of life and new civilizations to courageously get where no man has come before". These are facts, the realization of a dream, the application in works of the words of the Holy Father, Pope Francis. In the mission the project "Laudato Si" has been active for five years, and these are facts and not a science fiction film.

Pope Francis this week asked to celebrate the memory of the seven years of the encyclical "Laudato Si" and renewed his appeal to the Safeguarding of Creation, in his speech he reminded us that "Creation is a wonderful gift that God has placed in our hands so that we can enter into a relationship with Him". What we Marist missionaries found in Cameroon at the beginning of this mission was a gift: an uncontaminated environment and precisely for this reason difficult to be inhabited, devoid of the comforts we are used to in the West, but where we could enter into a deep relationship with God, with men and with All Creation. Because God is omnipresent and from every tree, from every fruit, from every blade of grass the power of God comes to meet and gives the strength to face the present.

A present made of extreme poverty, but of great love and passion.

A present where people die from natural disasters, where climatic upheavals strike undaunted and reap victims, destroy plantations with hard work and great sacrifices, but do not destroy hope. And it is precisely then that instead of breaking down and leaving everything, we start anew, with more will, with more strength, with more courage and with growing hope.

And it is precisely here that "we can recognize in you the imprint of His plan of love". The Holy Father reminds us how "God with the word... alternates the seasons, opens a palette of colors, with the variety of plants and animals" and it is precisely in the light of this message that the mission in Cameroon has come alive and is renewed daily: the purchase and planting of over one thousand and two hundred cocoa plants, a thousand bananas and over fifty fruit are the striking example; the construction of structures that respect the surrounding environment, housing for caretakers, facilities for the breeding of farm animals and education centers for spiritual life and training for young people, all this with a view to eco-sustainability.

There are no famous people to post on social media the developments of this mission, there are no names and high-sounding sponsors to advertise this work, but only the word of mouth of the generous people who believe in the project, who trust those who animate it, who support the Marist Fathers even at a distance, even if they will hardly be able to see with their own eyes those beauties of creation, but who know that they "are the children of the great King, of the Creator, capable of reading His signature in all Creation", with the lively desire to guard and improve it for those who will come after us, because "God always forgives, people forgive sometimes, but the earth never forgives! ".

That of Yaoundé, in the heart of the African forest, is a difficult land, where cultivation takes place with rural tools, with hoes, wheelbarrows and buckets, but where there is no fear of getting one's hands dirty, because in poverty a great awareness has been reached: "the earth is the mother of all".
