A Marist reflects on the Synodal Way / Un mariste réfléchit sur le chemin synodal

 Father Colin invites Marists to work for a synodal Church

Reading the documents from Rome accompanying Pope Francis' invitation to the synodal process, I was struck by echoes in our Marist tradition reflected in the words of Jean-Claude Colin. I give a series of sentences taken from the documents presenting the synodal process, followed by a few brief references to the Founder of the Marist Fathers. I hope that these few lines will motivate you to make your own meditation on the theme, and encourage you to develop an explicitly Marist synodality.

Document presenting the synodal process: "To live an ecclesial process involving the participation and inclusion of all, which offers everyone - in particular those who for various reasons find themselves marginalized - the opportunity to express themselves and to be listened to in order to contribute to the building up of the People of God..."."Synodality is the royal road for the Church, called to renew itself through the action of the Spirit and by listening to the Word. The ability to imagine a different future for the Church and its institutions, commensurate with the mission it has received, depends to a large extent on the choice to undertake processes of listening, dialogue and community discernment, in which everyone can participate and contribute...".

Father Colin: The Marist project, as it was conceived by the first Marists, formed a vast family, varied and diverse, according to the condition of its members. The image of a tree with many branches was used. The concept was inspired by the great religious families of the Middle Ages (Benedictines, Franciscans, Dominicans): The Society of Mary is a body open to all kinds of people (unlike the Society of Jesus), which is a "pure body") - (there will be) several branches - (to) embrace all - Mary, the Mother of mercy, gathers together all her scattered children Cor unum, anima una - Mary who gathers her scattered children under her mantle

Document presenting the synodal approach: Synodality is much more than the celebration of ecclesial meetings and assemblies of bishops, or a question of simple internal organization within the Church; it "designates the specific modus vivendi and operandi of the Church, the People of God, which manifests and concretely realizes its communion by journeying together, by gathering in assembly and by the active participation of all its members in its evangelizing mission". The pillars of a synodal Church are thus interwoven: communion, participation and mission.

To rediscover the face and form of a synodal Church where "everyone has something to learn. The faithful, the College of Bishops, the Bishop of Rome, each listening to the others; and all listening to the Holy Spirit.

Father Colin: Starting a new Church again, - Father Colin recognized that the phrase is bold and open to misinterpretation, but this risk did not prevent him from repeating it several times - according to the form of the beginnings of the Church, taking as the only model the nascent Church - cor unum et anima una - all brought together by our third order - Recognizing the Church of the Apostles as the only model and goal of our mission. the Church has developed,... everything is on fire; we too must bring everything together by our third order...

Document presenting the synodal approach: Recognizing the Christian community as a credible subject and a reliable partner for engaging in social dialogue, healing, reconciliation, inclusion and participation, rebuilding democracy, promoting fraternity and social friendship. At the same time, the choice to "walk together" is a prophetic sign for a human family in need of a common project, capable of seeking the good of all. A Church capable of communion and fraternity, of participation and solidarity, in fidelity to what it proclaims, will be able to stand alongside the poor and the smallest and lend them its voice.

Father Colin: The SM is at the service of communion in the world - the third aim of the SM is fidelity and loyalty to the Pope and the Church of Rome and its doctrine. But always with a vision that is broad and open to all, to make it easier for the most excluded to find communion. How happy I am to see that the Marists have a broad virtue that is easy and full of abandon [1841] - the law is made for man; if I cannot save him with the law, I will try to save him without the law [Sept 1848].

Document presenting the synodal process: We ask the Spirit to help us discover that communion, which brings together in unity the diversity of gifts, charisms and ministries, exists for mission: a synodal Church is a Church "on the move", a missionary Church, "with open doors" (EG, no. 46).

Let us enter with courage and freedom of heart into a process of conversion, without which that "continual reform which she [the Church] always needs as a human and earthly institution" (UR, no. 6; cf. EG, no. 26) will not be possible.

Father Colin: said on several occasions that the SM needed saints to accomplish its mission. That Mary, our superior and model, wanted to gather everything under her mantle. So, the Marian Church is an inclusive Church, open to all. And so it is for Marists. Such a task requires a profound conversion of heart and life...

 Le Père Colin invite les Maristes à œuvrer pour une Eglise synodale

En lisant des documents de Rome accompagnants l'invitation du Pape François à la démarche synodale, j'étais frappé par des échos dans notre tradition mariste reflétés dans des propos de Jean-Claude Colin. Je donne une série de phrases extraites des documents présentant la démarche synodale, suivie de quelques brèves références du Fondateur des Pères Maristes. J'espère que ces quelques lignes puissent vous motiver à faire votre propre méditation sur le thème, et vous inciter à développer une synodalité explicitement mariste.

Document présentant la démarche synodale : « Vivre un processus ecclésial impliquant la participation et l'inclusion de tous, qui offre à chacun – en particulier à ceux qui pour diverses raisons se trouvent marginalisés – l'opportunité de s'exprimer et d'être écoutés pour contribuer à l'édification du Peuple de Dieu … »

« La synodalité constitue la voie royale pour l'Église, appelée à se renouveler sous l'action de l'Esprit et grâce à l'écoute de la Parole. La capacité d'imaginer un futur différent pour l'Église et pour ses institutions, à la hauteur de la mission qu'elle a reçue, dépend pour une large part du choix d'entreprendre des processus d'écoute, de dialogue et de discernement communautaire, auxquels tous et chacun peuvent participer et contribuer… »

Père Colin : Le projet mariste, tel qu'il a été conçu par les premiers Maristes, formait une vaste famille, variée et diverse, selon la condition de ses membres. L'image d'un arbre à plusieurs branches a été utilisée. Le concept était inspiré par les grandes familles religieuses du Moyen Âge (Bénédictins, Franciscains, Dominicains) : La Société de Marie est un corps ouvert à toutes sortes de personnes (à la différence de la Société de Jésus), qui est un « corps pur

») – (il y aura) plusieurs branches – (pour) embrasser tous – Marie, la Mère de la miséricorde, réunit tous ses enfants dispersés. … Cor unum, anima una – Marie qui rassemble ses enfants dispersés sous son manteau.

Document présentant la démarche synodale : La synodalité est bien plus que la célébration de rencontres ecclésiales et d'assemblées d'évêques, ou qu'une question de simple organisation interne à l'Église; elle «désigne le modus vivendi et operandi spécifique de l'Église Peuple de Dieu qui manifeste et réalise concrètement sa communion en cheminant ensemble, en se rassemblant en assemblée et par la participation active de tous ses membres à sa mission évangélisatrice». Ainsi s'imbriquent ce qui constitue les piliers d'une Église synodale: communion, participation et mission. Redécouvrir le visage et la forme d'une Église synodale où «chacun a quelque chose à apprendre. Le Peuple fidèle, le Collège épiscopal, l'Évêque de Rome, chacun à l'écoute des autres ; et tous à l'écoute de l'Esprit Saint.

Père Colin : Recommencer une nouvelle Église, - le Père Colin reconnaissait que la phrase est audacieuse et ouverte à être mal interprétée, mais ce risque ne l'empêche pas de la redire à plusieurs reprises - selon la forme des débuts de l'Eglise, prendre comme seul modèle l'Église naissante – cor unum et anima una – tous rassemblés par notre tiers ordre - Reconnaître l'Eglise des Apôtres comme seul modèle et but de mission. l'Église s'est développée,… tout embrasé ; nous aussi nous devons tout agglomérer par notre tiers ordre …

Document présentant la démarche synodale : Reconnaître la communauté chrétienne comme sujet crédible et comme partenaire fiable pour s'engager sur les chemins du dialogue social, de la guérison, de la réconciliation, de l'inclusion et de la participation, de la reconstruction de la démocratie, de la promotion de la fraternité et de l'amitié sociale. En même temps, le choix de "marcher ensemble" est un signe prophétique pour une famille humaine qui a besoin d'un projet commun, en mesure de rechercher le bien de tous. Une Église capable de communion et de fraternité, de participation et de solidarité, dans la fidélité à ce qu'elle annonce, pourra se placer aux côtés des pauvres et des plus petits et leur prêter sa voix.

Père Colin : La SM est au service de la communion dans le monde – troisième but de la SM est la fidélité et la loyauté envers le Pape et l'Eglise de Rome et sa doctrine. Mais, toujours avec une vision large et ouverte à tous pour faciliter la démarche des plus exclus à trouver la communion. Que je suis content de voir que les Maristes ont une vertu large aisée et pleine d'abandon [1841] – la loi est faite pour l'homme ; si je ne puis le sauver avec la loi, je tâcherai de la sauver sans la loi [sept 1848]

Document présentant la démarche synodale : Nous demandons à l'Esprit de nous faire découvrir que la communion, qui assemble dans l'unité la diversité des dons, des charismes et des ministères, existe pour la mission: une Église synodale est une Église "en sortie", une Église missionnaire, «aux portes ouvertes» (EG, n° 46) Entrons avec courage et avec une liberté de cœur dans un processus de conversion sans lequel cette «réforme continue dont elle [l'Église] a toujours besoin en tant qu'institution humaine et terrestre» (UR, n° 6 ; cf. EG, n° 26) ne sera pas possible.

Père Colin : disait à plusieurs reprises que la SM avait besoin de saints pour accomplir sa mission. Que Marie, notre supérieur et modèle voulait tout rassembler sous son manteau. Donc, l'Eglise mariale est une Eglise inclusive et ouverte à tous. Ainsi, donc, pour les Maristes. Une telle tâche requiert une profonde conversion de cœur et de vie …
