Water: essential, fundamental, universal human right.

With this title Fr Luigi Savoldelli sm, Italian Marist in Cameroon says "I wanted to start this, my first article, on the experience that I am living with my brother Africans and the people of Cameroon, resuming a passage of the encyclical "Laudato Si" by Pope Francis. In the context of this encyclical, the agricultural project that we are sharing is part of the Marist community of Cameroon and a group of local poor families.

Among the elements of the project an important aspect is that of water, a vital and essential element for human life; In order to respond to the need to be able to guarantee to the local community, which will gather around the cultivation project, there are new developments of the well and the water tower, developments that aim to provide these families with clean drinking water.

The difficulties of getting water

I still remember well my arrival in Cameroon and among the various aspects that affected my attention and sensitivity, what perhaps most shook me was the ban on drinking water from streams or on the street. Even in Yaoundé, where I am, despite being the capital, the situation of the water network is still very partial, incomplete and precarious; therefore, neither the quality of the water nor the continuity of its availability are guaranteed. This situation confirmed to me once again that water is truly the essential, fundamental and universal element for life. In the past year, I have seen the effort that everyone here encounters every day, from children to the elderly, to obtain water. Although this job costs effort and sweat, people are really happy and full of joy when they find some water in the streams. This situation becomes even more difficult during the dry season, when, for cultivation we encounter more difficulties forthe garden and we have to draw water from the stream for watering, although we are aware of the poor quality of that water.

The water well

In this context is the idea, the project and the realization of the water well for our farming project. On the one hand to ensure water for the garden and on the other, an even more important reason to ensure the families living at our farm have good, drinking water.

This project, in fact, takes place in the heart of the forest, where there was no drinking water and in this area the population live in a precarious situation and are mainly supported with the products of the fields.

This situation of difficulty makes us share and hear our words in the encyclical Laudato Si: "A particularly serious problem is that of the quality of water available to the poor, which causes many deaths every day. Water-related diseases, including those caused by micro-organisms and chemicals, are common among the poor. Dysentery and cholera, due to inadequate sanitation and water supplies, are a significant factor in suffering and infant mortality." (L Si No.29)

With the limited means of our District and the help of the Italian benefactors, we have created the drinking water well, a long and difficult work done mostly by hand; in order to have drinking water it was necessary to dig up to 15 meters deep and make a layer of gravel and sand that guarantee the potability.

 Water, a great gift

To complete the well's operation, we have planned and built a tower and a water tank alongside this well to upgrade and complete the drinking water supply system. Again, the project of the tower and the water tank has have been possible to buy thanks to the sensitivity of many Italian friends, sensitive to the words of Pope Francis in the encyclical "Laudato Si": "The urgent challenge of protecting our common home includes the concern of uniting the whole human family in the search for sustainable and integral development, because we know that things can change. The Creator does not abandon us, he never backs down in his project of love, he does not regret having created us. Humanity still has the capacity to work together to build our common home. I would like to express gratitude, encourage and thank all those who, in the most diverse areas of human activity, are working to ensure the protection of the home we share. Those who struggle vigorously to resolve the dramatic consequences of environmental degradation in the lives of the world's poorest deserve special gratitude. Young people are crying out for change from us. They wonder how it is possible that we claim to build a better future without thinking about the environmental crisis and the suffering of the excluded.

I make an urgent call to renew the dialogue on how we are building the future of the planet ... We need a new universal solidarity. As the Bishops of South Africa have said, "the talents and involvement of all are necessary to repair the damage caused by humans on God's creation." We can all collaborate as God's tools for the care of creation, each with its own culture and experience, its own initiatives and abilities."

(L Si nos.13-14)

The spirit of collaboration and solidarity has characterized these works more than any other aspect, the collaboration between the workers of the cultivation and the solidarity of the Italian friends have allowed this project, which seemed unfeasible, to take shape and texture.

Today the cultivation project is progressing very well, thanks in part to these interventions that allow good and drinking water, both for the livelihood of the families participating in the project and for all cultivation activities.

L'ACQUA: DIRITTO UMANO ESSENZIALE, FONDAMENTALE E UNIVERSALE
