Fr Olivier Laurent sm, Toulon, France, has been engaged in Islamic-Christian, and other Inter-religious Dialogue Initiatives for many years. Toulon is 150 km from Nice, where recent terrorist killings took place. At a time of heightened tensions in France, and on the world scene, we have this encouraging report sent by Fr Paddy O'Hare sm, in community with Olivier.
Olivier Laurent lived in Senegal for 30 years, a country 90% Muslim, where the Christian community has become well integrated. For ten years he took part in a project to improve the living conditions in Dakar's disadvantaged areas with a team that was 70% Muslim. He then spent four years at the Forum 104 in Paris working with people engaged in new spiritual and interreligious research and has taken part in numerous courses of academic formation in the area of Islam. On the diocesan level he has been engaged with teams responsible for relations with Muslims in Lyon and Toulon. Presently he is the director of the Marist Spiritual and Cultural Centre (CCSM) in Toulon
Toulon
The military (navy) port of Toulon displays many traces of France's colonial past. The total population is 450,000 of which 10% is Muslim.It includes numerous French citizens who were repatriated from Algeria, as well as former residents of Tunis and Morocco, comprising different social groups, many of whom are deeply rooted in their past and not at all open to having positive relations with Muslims or Islam.
During my first appointment in Toulon (2004 – 2009) there was still a certain openness and a real desire for encounters between Muslims and Christians. A committee comprised equally of Muslims and Christians charged with promoting dialogue, used to meet monthly and organize neighborly gatherings, as well as study groups to promote a better understanding of Islam. A festival, coinciding with the World Migrants Day was organized annually on the Feast of the Epiphany, and on one occasion, olive trees were planted in the garden of a mosque and a local parish church.
My second appointment to Toulon began in 2013 and I soon noticed how the scene was beginning to change, especially after the terrorist attacks in France and the growing Salafist influence in the more disadvantaged neighborhoods. Many Catholics and members of the clergy were no longer favorable towards Islamic-Christian dialogue. At the Marist Spiritual and Cultural Centre an inter-religious committee was set up, and an annual Prayer Meeting for Peace organized in line with John-Paul II's Assisi Prayer initiative. Between 150 and 200 people would gather, representing different Christian confessions, as well as Jews, Muslims, people from various Asiatic traditions and new spiritual movements. Best remembered is the "Boat for Peace", which sailed around Toulon harbour and included prayers by all for the migrants who died at sea in the Mediterranean. A brother from the Community of St. John, well qualified in the area of dialogue, was in charge of the diocesan secretariat for promoting relations with Muslims and numerous activities involving members of the CCSM took place.
The Centre also welcomed and supported the group "Co-exister", young people between the ages of 18 and 30 belonging to various religions, and organized meetings and debates together on inter-religious questions. I am also involved with an Islamic-Christian friendship group (GAIC) where topics such as "Who is Jesus? Mary's role? Belief in God" are presented by two people from different religions, and then discussed by all. The Centre also organizes conferences featuring speakers from the Marseille Catholic Institution of Science and Religions, as well as writers and people active in the area of Solidarity.We enjoy friendly relations too, for example, when the Muslim community at La Garde, adjacent to Toulon, invites the Marist community each year to the "Iftar", a break in the Ramadan, providing a very convivial prayer time and meal together. Other initiatives include "Together with Mary", an Islamic-Christian festival on the occasion of the Feast of the Annunciation. Also "Three Women, Three Religions", a round-table dialogue between three women, Jewish, Muslim and Christian, based on texts from their respective religious traditions.
In conclusion, it has to be said, unfortunately, that inter-religious dialogue is now being stifled at the diocesan level, due to the replacement of the diocesan delegate as well as a strong identitarian influence.Dialogue is not understood or accepted by the majority of the clergy. On the other hand, there is support and encouragement for initiatives to convert Muslims, based on a certain interpretation of the Roman document "Dialogue and Proclamation".

Il a suivi plusieurs parcours de formation académique sur l'Islam. Il a été membre des équipes diocésaines du service des relations avec les musulmans à Lyon et à Toulon. Il anime actuellement le Centre Culturel et Spirituel Mariste de Toulon.
A Toulon.
Port militaire, fortement marqué par le passé colonial de la France. 10% de la population est musulmane. Il s'agit d'une agglomération très étendue de 450.000 habitants. Elle abrite de nombreux rapatriés français d'Algérie et des anciens résidents en Tunisie et au Maroc. La population comprend des groupes sociaux à forte connotation identitaire et communautaire, aux positionnements affirmés vis des musulmans et de l'Islam.
En 2004- 2009. (Premier séjour d'OL à Toulon)
A cette époque il y a un climat d'ouverture et un réel désir de rencontre entre musulmans et chrétiens.
Tous les mois, une équipe chargée d'animer le dialogue entre musulmans et chrétiens se réunit. Elle comprend autant de musulmans que de chrétiens. Elle organise des rencontres conviviales dans les quartiers. Elle donne des cours d'initiation à la connaissance de l'Islam. Et elle anime, chaque année, une grande fête, jumelée tantôt avec la journée mondiale des migrants et tantôt avec la fête de tous les peuples, le jour de l'Epiphanie. C'est à cette occasion que deux oliviers seront plantés dans les jardins de la mosquée et celui de l'Eglise saint Jean à la cité Berthe de La Seyne / mer. Je quitte Toulon en Août 2009.
En 2013-2020.
A mon retour à Toulon, je constate un grand changement. Le climat n'est plus le même, suite aux attentats terroristes en France et à l'influence de groupes musulmans salafistes dans les quartiers. De nombreux catholiqueset membres du clergé ne sont pas favorables au dialogue Islamo-Chrétien.
Une reprise de celui-ci a lieu au Centre Culturel et Spirituel Mariste avec quelques laïcs maristes. Ils créent un comité Interreligieuxpour célébrer chaque année la prière pour la Paix à l'occasion de la grande prière d'Assise initiée par le pape Jean-Paul II. Y participent environ 150 à 200 personnes de diverses confessions chrétiennes, des juifs et des musulmans, quelques représentants des traditions asiatiques et de nouveaux mouvements spirituels. Une des célébrations les plus marquantes fut « Un bateau pour la Paix ». Une prière organisée sur un bateau bus qui a traversé la rade de Toulon et prié pour tous les migrants morts en mer Méditerranée.
Le secrétariat diocésain pour les relations avec les musulmans est confié à un frère de Saint Jean bien formé au dialogue et qui initie de nombreuses initiatives auxquelles participent plusieurs membres du Centre Culturel et Spirituel Mariste.
Le Centre de son côté accueille et soutient l'association Coexister, association interconvictionnelle qui s'adresse aux jeunes de 18 à 30 ans. Nous animons ensemble des rencontres débat sur des questions religieuses ou sur le vivre ensemble dans le respect des convictions de chacun.
Je participe à l'animation d'un groupe d'amitié Islamo-Chrétienne (GAIC) ou sont abordés des sujets religieux : Qui est Jésus ? La place de Marie, Croire en Dieu… Il ya toujours deux intervenants qui donnent la vision de chaque religion. Suit un échange entre les participants.
Le CCSM organise également des soirées et des conférences avec des intervenants de l'InstitutCatholique des Sciences et religions de Marseille, d'écrivains et d'acteurs de la solidarité.
La communauté mariste répond aux invitations amicales pendant le mois de Ramadan, notamment celles de l'Iftar,soirée de rupture du jeûne,par la communauté musulmane de la Garde.
Il ya également deux autres belles initiatives auxquelles des membres du CCSM participent : Ensemble avec Marie, célébration islamo –chrétienne autour de Marie ( à l'occasion de la fête de l'annonciation) et Trois femmes, trois religions , un dialogue entre une juive, une chrétienne et une musulmane à partir de leurs textes sources.
En conclusion. Il y a hélas un essoufflement au niveau diocésain depuis le remplacement du délégué diocésain et du fait des fortes poussées identitaires. Le dialogue interreligieux n'est pas bien compris et accepté par le clergé. Des initiatives sont soutenuesqui encouragent la conversion des musulmans en s'appuyant sur une interprétation obvie du document romain « dialogue et annonce ».
