On May 11, 2024, I, Lauro da Silva Ferreira, at the request of the Assistant General Father Ben McKenna, I joined the Meeting of the Commission for Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation – JPIC Roma, of the USG [Union of Superiors General-men]/UISG [International Union of Superiors General – women]. The meeting took place at: Piazza di Ponte Sant'Angelo.

The first factor that struck me was the number of participants. Representatives from more than seventy different religious congregations. The vast majority were first-time members of the commission. For this reason, I believe, the meeting took place with an introductory bias, in the sense of presenting the commission to the participants, its identity and mission. Due to the large number of participants, the necessary individual presentation of each participant took a lot of time. On the other hand, it was interesting to see the richness of the Church's charisms, thinking about a common cause, which is the now traditional Justice and Peace Commission, renamed the Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation Commission. Some congregations were participating for the first time.
The objectives were presented as follows:
- reflect on the challenges we have to overcome
- connect in a personal and congregational way
- Commit to the Commission's initiatives here in Rome
- To maintain our unity, because when we unite, we move forward, more slowly, it is true, but certainly safer.
In the opening prayer, we reflected on the reality where we are, and on the accomplishment of the work of Jesus. As St. Paul said: the whole creation groans, as in labor. These are the signs of the times, the ecological crisis, which is also humanitarian and social, because everything is connected, as Pope Francis always reminds us. So, we have an ecological crisis that is not disconnected with a political, and economic, and health, and spiritual, and educational crisis. Injustice and imbalance in the integrity of creation leads to the absence of peace. Peace depends on justice and the integrity and balance of creation.
That is why Pope Francis invites the whole Church (and the congregations, of course) to a new form of mission. What does it mean to see all of this interconnected? "The cry of the Earth and the cry of the poor is the same cry" because, let us repeat, everything is connected.
Following this reflection, a presentation was made on the functioning and structure of the JPIC Commission. It was established 42 years ago, and about 1900 women's and 200 men's congregations are listed in the Conference. Which makes use of the see-judge-act method. That it has the preferential option for the poor as an important aspect of its mission. That the commission is made up of 16 members, divided into 3 working groups. That JPIC is actually a way of life because it should be part of every ministry of ours: in education, in parishes, in hospitals, etc.
We were divided into groups, by language. I stayed in an Italian-speaking group with three Italian sisters, an Italian priest, and a Brazilian sister. We reflect on the following questions: 1. How do we feel looking at all these crises? 2. Personally, what points are we called to understand in this crisis? 3. What can be done after this analysis?
After the reflections of the groups, we held a plenary session and the rapporteur of each group presented the answers to the discussions. I was the rapporteur for my group. In a few words, we said the following: in the face of the current situation of generalized crisis, we feel sad, with a feeling of smallness, vulnerability and powerlessness. We need a deeper knowledge of the subject in order to better serve us. Encouraging congregations to offer a reference name to be part of a JPIC working group would be interesting. To create some mechanism for the multiplication of the knowledge produced, of the experiences carried out, and of the dissemination of both. In this regard, no congregation has had the time to present its initiatives at the international and congregational level. For this reason, I was also unable to present what the Marists are doing at the moment. Due to the change in the scheme of the meeting to something more introductive, there was no initiative in this meeting to share the experiences of the congregations in actions connected to justice, peace and the integrity of creation. Our group also suggested that JPIC produce some formative material to use in our houses of formation (seminaries and convents).
The moment of sharing of each group was also very long, but very meaningful. It was interesting to hear different ideas and thoughts from different congregations. For me, personally, I was very touched by the concern of the USG/UISG to offer 5 different languages so that the participants can express themselves in more depth and with a richer vocabulary. Given that all the participants in the meeting live in Rome, this is truly extraordinary. It makes all the difference in the final result.
I thank you from the bottom of my heart for the invitation extended to me. I would like to say that I enjoyed participating in this meeting, and that I am happy to know that we Marists are connected to the most urgent needs of the Church, expressed by Pope Francis and promptly responded to by Consecrated Religious Life.

Rapport de la réunion de la Commission JPIC - USG/UISG à Rome

Le 11 mai 2024, à la demande de l'Assistant général, le Père Ben McKenna, j'ai assisté à la réunion de la Commission pour la justice, la paix et l'intégrité de la création (JPIC) de l'Union des Supérieurs Généraux (USG) et de l'Union Internationale des Supérieures Générales (UISG). La réunion s'est tenue [à Rome], Piazza di Ponte Sant'Angelo, 28, de 9 h à 12 h 30.
Le premier élément qui m'a frappé est le nombre des participants, avec les représentants de plus de soixante-dix congrégations religieuses différentes. La grande majorité d'entre eux participaient à la commission pour la première fois. Pour cette raison, je pense, la réunion s'est déroulée comme une rencontre d'introduction, une présentation aux participants de la commission, de son identité et de sa mission. En raison du grand nombre, la nécessaire présentation individuelle a pris beaucoup de temps. Mais d'autre part il était intéressant de voir la richesse des charismes de l'Église, en réfléchissant sur une cause commune, la désormais traditionnelle Commission Justice et Paix, rebaptisée Commission Justice, Paix et Intégrité de la Création. Certaines congrégations y participaient pour la première fois.
Voici les objectifs qui ont été présentés :
- réfléchir aux défis que nous devons relever
- entrer en relation au niveau personnel et au niveau de la congrégation
- s'engager dans les initiatives prises par la Commission ici, à Rome
- rester dans l'unité, car lorsque nous sommes unis, nous avançons certes plus lentement, mais de manière plus sûre.
En prière d'ouverture, nous avons réfléchi sur la réalité dans laquelle nous nous trouvons et sur la [manière] d'accomplir l'œuvre de Jésus. Comme le dit saint Paul, la création tout entière gémit, comme en travail [d'enfantement]. Ce sont les signes des temps, la crise écologique, qui est aussi humanitaire et sociale, car tout est lié, comme nous le rappelle toujours le pape François. La crise écologique que nous connaissons ne peut pas être séparée d'une crise politique, économique, sanitaire, spirituelle et éducative. L'injustice et le déséquilibre dans l'intégrité de la création conduisent à l'absence de paix. La paix dépend de la justice, de l'intégrité et de l'équilibre de la création.
C'est pourquoi le pape François invite toute l'Église (et les congrégations religieuses, bien sûr) à une nouvelle forme de mission. Qu'est-ce que cela signifie de voir l'interconnexion de tout cela? "Le cri de la Terre et le cri des pauvres sont un même cri" car, répétons-le, tout est lié.
Après cette réflexion est venue une présentation du fonctionnement et de la structure de la Commission JPIC. Elle a été créée il y a 42 ans et environ 1900 congrégations féminines et 200 congrégations masculines sont parties prenantes de sa Conférence. La méthode qu'elle utilise est le "voir-juger-agir". L'option préférentielle pour les pauvres est un aspect important de sa mission. La Commission est composée de 16 membres, répartis en trois groupes de travail. En fait |la démarche] JPIC est un mode de vie, puisqu'elle devrait être partie intégrante de chacun de nos ministères, éducation, paroisses, hôpitaux, etc.
Nous nous sommes ensuite divisés en groupes par langue. J'ai participé à un groupe de langue italienne, avec trois sœurs italiennes, un prêtre italien et une sœur brésilienne. Nous avons réfléchi à partir de trois questions :
1. Comment nous situons-nous face à l'ensemble de ces crises ?
2. Personnellement, quels sont les points que nous sommes avons besoin de comprendre dans cette crise ?
3. Que peut-on faire après cette analyse ?
Après les réflexions en groupes, nous nous sommes retrouvés en session plénière et le rapporteur de chaque groupe a présenté les réponses de son groupe aux questions. J'étais le rapporteur de mon groupe. Voici en quelques mots ce que nous avons dit : face à la situation actuelle de crise généralisée, nous nous sentons accablés de tristesse, petits, vulnérables, dépourvus de pouvoir. Nous avons besoin d'approfondir nos connaissances sur la question pour mieux être au service les uns des autres. Il serait intéressant d'encourager les congrégations à proposer une personne qui serve de référence, pour faire partie d'un groupe de travail JPIC, et de lancer un processus de multiplication des connaissances produites, des expériences réalisées et de la diffusion des unes et des autres. A cet égard, aucune congrégation n'a eu le temps de présenter ses initiatives au niveau international et à son niveau propre. Pour cette raison, je n'ai pas non plus pu présenter ce que font les Maristes en ce domaine. En raison du changement des objectifs de la réunion pour en faire une rencontre plus introductive, il n'y a eu aucune initiative pour partager les expériences des congrégations dans des actions liées à la justice, à la paix et à l'intégrité de la création. Notre groupe a aussi suggéré que JPIC produise du matériel de formation à utiliser dans nos maisons de formation, séminaires et couvents.
Le temps de partage des rapports de groupe a également été très long, mais il a été très significatif. Il était intéressant d'entendre des idées et des réflexions différentes en fonction des différentes congrégations. Personnellement, j'ai été très touché par le souci de l'USG-UISG de travailler en cinq langues différentes, afin que les participants puissent s'exprimer avec plus de profondeur, dans un vocabulaire plus riche. C'est vraiment extraordinaire, étant donné que tous les participants vivent à Rome. Cela fait toute la différence dans le résultat final.
Je suis reconnaissant du fond du cœur pour l'invitation qui m'a été faite. Je voudrais dire que j'ai apprécié de participer à cette rencontre, et je suis heureux de savoir que nous, Maristes, sommes en phase avec les besoins les plus urgents de l'Église, exprimés par le Pape François et auxquels la vie religieuse consacrée peut répondre avec rapidité.
